Bio
Matt Alter
Musician
A lifetime of music best describes Matt Alter’s journey—one that has come full circle on stage.
After graduating high school, Matt purchased his first guitar and began as a self-taught musician before refining his craft under the guidance of a dedicated instructor—“thank you, Kenny.” As career and life responsibilities took over, the guitar was set aside, but the pull of music never left. Once established in his career as a surgeon, Matt returned to music with renewed focus and purpose.
He went on to perform in multiple cover and original bands throughout the Richmond, Virginia area, including opportunities to open for nationally touring acts. These years shaped his approach to live performance—dynamic, emotionally driven, and rooted in connection with the audience. His ongoing collaboration with guitarist and producer Tavis Stanley (Art of Dying) has further refined both his recorded and live sound.
Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Matt has expanded his solo work into a full live experience with Matt Alter and The Misunderstood, a high-energy band formed specifically to bring his catalog to the stage. The band delivers a powerful, polished live set drawing from four albums of original material while maintaining the raw honesty that defines his songwriting. They are actively booking shows and are available for clubs, festivals, and regional touring.
Matt’s debut album, The Bitter Pill, was released on February 14, 2020, followed by Race to the Finish on December 5, 2021. His third album, Did I Offend You?, produced and mixed by Tavis Stanley, was released on December 15, 2023. His fourth solo album, I’m Lonely… It’s My Fault., once again produced by Stanley, is scheduled for release on March 6, 2026.
As always, thank you for the continued support.
““Train to Nowhere” is a song that moves with purpose, one that understands the weight of its own narrative without overdoing it. From the opening intro, Matt Alter manages to balance reflection and momentum in a way that is deliberate and effortless. And it’s a track that is built on experience. Sound wise, there is a familiar warmth here for anyone who remembers Technicolor from Race to the Finish. The guitars glide with understated polish, the rhythm section keeps a quiet tension humming beneath the surface and Alter’s vocals have that this lived in quality he has always had. Lyrically, the song navigates that strange, uneasy space between forward motion and uncertainty. It’s about being on a train and not fully knowing the destination, about the moments when life keeps moving even when clarity feels far away. Here, Alter simply presents this feeling, and it is enough. It is this honesty which he pairs witih exacting musical choices that makes the track a welcome addition to your playlist. From the forthcoming album I’m Lonely… It’s My Fault, which drops beginning of March, Matt Later promises a record that will continue to explore personal and introspective terrain. “Train to Nowhere” is one of those tracks that is a natural evolution of Matt Alter’s songwriting voice, both for longtime listeners and new fans alike.” - Jane Lambert
“Matt Alter presents his latest track, “Tossed Away”, released on January 9, 2026, as well as the track “Train to Nowhere”, released on February 6, 2026. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Matt Alter leads a fascinating double life, balancing his career as a surgeon with his all-consuming passion for the guitar. Initially self-taught before honing his skills with renowned instructors, he spent many years playing in various bands on the Richmond music scene before embarking on a solo career. Accompanied by producer Tavis Stanley of the band Art of Dying, he is preparing to release his fourth album, *I'm Lonely… It's My Fault*, scheduled for March 6, 2026. His style, rooted in alternative rock and pop rock, is distinguished by a sincere and direct approach, where instrumental technique always serves the emotional message. His journey demonstrates a rare artistic resilience, proving that it's never too late to bring your own compositions to life and fully express yourself through the guitar. The track “Tossed Away” is a driving hard rock song, offering a striking contrast between its upbeat music and its decidedly darker lyrics. The lyrics explore the painful feeling of being used and manipulated in a relationship, comparing the victim to a discarded stepping stone. The energetic instrumentation and guitar solo underscore the frustration and brutal realization described in the verses. Meanwhile, “Train to Nowhere” delves into a more post-punk and melancholic aesthetic to address the feeling of social isolation. The lyrics depict the bitterness of feeling like an outsider in a crowd, sitting in a packed train car yet utterly alone. This metaphor of the train to nowhere perfectly illustrates inner turmoil and the need to find direction in a world perceived as a desert. Together, these two tracks confirm Matt Alter's ability to transform betrayal and loneliness into powerful pieces of alternative rock.” - Radio Castor
